The vision given to Tim and Lucia Van Maanen in December 2010 to build a school in rural Pignon, Haiti, is now near completion. On March 7-16, a team of 16 people from the Pella area traveled to Pignon to paint and continue work on the school, scheduled to open this fall. This trip included 7 students from Pella Christian High School, growing the partnership between the students of Pella Christian in Pella, IA, and those students soon to be in school in Bay Savenette, Haiti.

The finished school building.

Two scripture verses were painted on the school building in Creole to mark the school’s purpose – to make the Lord’s famous. The first is Isaiah 40:31: “They that hope in the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall rise up on wings like eagles. They shall run and not grow weary. They shall walk and not grow faint.” The second is Psalm 121: 1-2, fitting with the backdrop of Mt. Pignon. “I lift my eyes up to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.”

The school will open this September with grades Kindergarten through 3rd Grade to start, eventually having students up to 6th Grade. Scholarship opportunities will be available within the next couple of weeks, a vital role in helping these very poor families be able to send their kids to school and support a feeding program for the students. The kickoff for the scholarship opportunities will be on April 29 at a Calvary Christian Reformed Event in Pella, IA. If interested in sponsoring a child to attend school, please contact Tim and Lucia Van Maanen or Tim Brand at email address tbrand@mh4h.org. More information on the scholarshipping opportunities will be available within the next few weeks. To God be the Glory!
