Building a Legacy | Education in Haiti & Abaco

by | Dec 8, 2023

Education is a fundamental pillar that empowers individuals, strengthens communities, and paves the way for a brighter future. In countries like Haiti and Abaco, where access to quality education is often limited, our programs play a vital role in breaking the cycle of poverty, fostering resilience, and creating opportunities for sustainable development.

Haiti

Haiti’s education rate is the worst in the Western Hemisphere. The cycles of poverty have held Haitians back. 60% of Haitians are illiterate, and the average Haitian, age 25 years or older, has less than five years of schooling (USAID). An under-resourced education system, lack of skilled teachers, financial insecurity, and chronic malnutrition, which stunt children’s physical and cognitive development, have all contributed to this significant issue.

In Haiti, we have three education initiatives. The Yellow Iron School of Light Preschool focuses on young children’s cognitive, emotional, social, and spiritual development. The preschool provides access to learning tools and resources not typically found in Haitian classrooms, creating a foundation for future academic success. This holistic approach carries into our fundamental school serving students grades 1 to 9. The school aims to produce educated and successful leaders who can positively impact Haiti. Through rigorous academic programs and a nurturing environment, students have the skills and knowledge needed to thrive.

Many in Haiti cannot afford their children’s most basic tuition fees. Our 180 for Haiti scholarships remove the obstacles preventing children from attending school. First, we meet children’s financial needs, covering the cost of their education. Second, we meet the physical demands of children by providing them with daily meals, increasing their capacity to learn. Through this program, we intentionally work alongside local schools to improve Haiti’s education level. Investing in teachers and students and supporting local schools, we help secure education for future generations.

We are making a tangible difference in students’ lives across the Caribbean, empowering them to overcome adversity and reach their full potential. As we reflect on the transformative power of education, we need your support to continue this life-changing ministry. Together, we can create a future where every child has access to quality education and the opportunity to build a brighter tomorrow.

Abaco

The Abaco education system has faced many challenges over the recent years. In September 2019, Hurricane Dorian destroyed many of the schools on the island, forcing all to close. Then COVID-19 hit, further shuttering schools. Over the next two years, students adapted through hybrid learning, with most learning virtually and a few in-person classes. This caused problems for educators, students, and parents, as many learners slipped through the wide cracks in the education system and fell multiple grade levels behind in core subjects such as reading and math.

We have intentional, collaborative programming to combat these issues and address the specific needs of students. Our Academic Recovery for Kids (ARK) program provides students with academic resources, emphasizing Reading and Math Literacy for students below grade level. Amidst the trauma experienced by the students and the absence of youth programs, our education programs prioritize character development. Through intentional teaching, students learn valuable life skills and leadership qualities that empower them to become responsible citizens and contribute positively to their communities. For students struggling with reading skills, we offer an after-school tutoring program. This program primarily focuses on 1st and 2nd graders who have either missed school or are English Second Language Learners.

In 2023, we established a library in the public school, equipping it with books, learning materials, and appropriate learning technology, and purchased the AR book quiz program to implement Renaissance Reading tests in school fully. There are 80 students in the ARK program and 800 in the character development program
