How Many Hands Transforms Lives in Haiti
How Many Hands Transforms Lives in Haiti
True transformation happens when we address multiple needs at the same time. As a leading nonprofit in Haiti, our commitment is “inch-wide, mile-deep,” meaning our nearly 150 Haitian staff work alongside Haitian leaders and families to build lasting solutions in six focus areas that create a complete and stable foundation for life.
These efforts are resourced by our “generosity engine,” the combined efforts of our donors and thrift markets in the U.S. This allows our local Haitian staff to build communities and be the hands and feet of Christ.
Health Assistance
Prioritizing Care for the Most Vulnerable
In a country with critical healthcare gaps, our work is a lifeline, focusing on the most marginalized: women, children, the elderly, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and people with disabilities. We focus on proactive, life-saving care within the First 1,000 Days (conception to a child’s third birthday), the most critical window for development, alongside emergency support for those with no other options.
Our Programs
- The First 1,000 Days Program: Providing critical medical care, maternal nutrition, and education from pregnancy to age three, empowering mothers to protect their child’s cognitive development and build a healthy foundation for the next generation.
- Comprehensive Prenatal Care and Nutritional Support: Providing regular check-ups, essential lab work, and daily nutrient-dense lunches/prenatal vitamins for pregnant and nursing mothers.
- Stretch Out Your Hand: Started by our Haitian staff encountering needs in their communities beyond our existing programs, this program offers specialized, life-saving medical intervention and emergency assistance for critical-need individuals who have no other healthcare options.
- Mobility Carts: We partner with Mobility Worldwide to distribute rugged, hand-cranked carts. These devices conquer difficult roads, granting the gift of mobility and empowering individuals to reconnect with their communities.
Education
Breaking Cycles of Poverty
Access to quality, Christ-centered education is the most effective way to break the multi-generational cycle of poverty. Education is a holistic investment in a child’s cognitive, emotional, and spiritual development.
Our Programs
- Sylvain School of Light Preschool & Fundamental School: Providing a Christ-centered environment from pre-K through 9th grade, prioritizing modern methods and spiritual foundation.
- Daily Nutritional Support: Providing breakfast and lunch to every student, every day—the only reliable source of nutrition for many.
- Holistic Student Support: Committed to the development of every child, our comprehensive approach includes support for students with special needs, supplemental learning through summer and after-school programs, and vital leadership development opportunities.
Agriculture
Nurturing Land and Livelihoods
Spiritual growth is difficult when physical hunger is constant. Our work transforms the landscape into one of abundance, moving families from a mindset of survival to a mindset of investing in their own futures.
Our Programs
- Alpha Gardens: Providing exclusive community plots for families (primarily mothers) enrolled in or graduated from the First 1,000 Days program, enabling them to provide the labor to grow nutrient-dense food for their own households.
- Agriculture Extension Program: Training local leaders in advanced techniques to manage water, enrich soil, and increase crop yields for long-term food security.
- Husbandry Economic Project (H.E.P.): A family-based cooperative equipping parents to breed livestock. Families sell offspring back to our programs, and we match their profits to fund their child’s education—building a closed-loop economy that restores dignity.
Safe Structures
Building a Foundation for Security
A safe home is the physical foundation upon which a secure life is built. By transforming living conditions, we provide the stability necessary for families to focus on education and economic growth.
Our Programs
- Concrete Floor Installation: Pouring solid concrete floors to replace dirt floors that harbor parasites, drastically reducing infant mortality, skin disease, and respiratory illness for a small investment.
- Complete Home Rebuilding: Building 140 and counting permanent, cinder-block homes reinforced with rebar for families in critical need.
- Local Economic Impact: Utilizing local Haitian masons and laborers for every project, stimulating the local economy while we build.
Economic Opportunity
Empowering Self-Sufficiency
True transformation requires a shift from dependency to dignity. We focus on empowering individuals to provide for themselves and secure their children’s future.
Our Programs
- Vocational Training & Entrepreneurship Mentorship: Equipping men and women with high-demand skills (e.g., trade skills) and business coaching to start ventures or find meaningful employment. This includes a key partnership with Vi Bella, which trains artisans, giving them technical knowledge and a pathway to entering the workforce with confidence.
- Agriculture Internships: Providing hands-on, practical experience to local youth and emerging leaders in advanced agronomy techniques, fostering future self-sufficiency.
- Student Gardens (Launching 2026): This initiative teaches students about food security, entrepreneurship, and collaboration as they work toward a closed-loop economy.
- Market Connection & Matched Savings: Creating internal markets by purchasing program-grown produce and livestock, and matching a portion of family profits for an education fund for their children.
Life Development
Cultivating Ethical Leadership
Sustainable change will come from within—driven by a new generation of ethical, Christ-centered leaders. We invest in the hearts and minds of the Haitian people to ensure progress is sustained for generations.
Our Programs
- Lead Like Jesus Training: Teaching participants how to lead with the heart, head, hands, and habits of Jesus (servant leadership), this program is the cornerstone of our leadership development.
- Adult Literacy Classes: Unlocking the ability of talented individuals to participate in commerce, local government, and church leadership.
- Mentorship and Accountability: Providing relational support for emerging leaders to build the integrity and spiritual foundation needed to lead their communities.
- Community-Based Bible studies: Cultivating spiritual growth and community reconciliation through weekly small-group study and training in God’s Word.
- Marriage Services: Including pre-marital counseling and conducting the marriage ceremony.
