On October 27th and 28th the Justice Team, a group of Central College Students dedicated to taking steps to eradicate social, economic, and political injustices all over the world, took the world’s “selfie” phenomenon to a new level. After becoming aware of Many Hands for Haiti’s Give Joy alternative Christmas giving campaign, they decided to take some responsibility for themselves in this effort. The Give Joy campaign is a fundraising program that allows donors specific gift options for Haitians in need, such as home-sewn diapers, bibles, indestructible soccer balls, new concrete floors, home rebuilding, and goats.
With the help of a local farmer, the Justice Team borrowed a goat for their fundraising endeavor. Over a span of two days, anyone who came across this goat had the opportunity to take a “selfie” with her. The students were asked to give $1 for this selfie picture. These photos were uploaded to various social media websites with a caption that included “#goatselfiecentral” for an opportunity to be rewarded as the best selfie! Jeremiah Megel was the big winner of the selfie contest, and was awarded a free cup of frozen yogurt from The Mango Tree. In the Give Joy campaign, a goat costs $50 and the #goatselfiecentral fundraiser was able to pay for exactly seven goats for families in need in Haiti. Our deepest thanks to these students and those who participated in this great effort! Keep an eye out for more upcoming events with the Justice Team as they continue their fundraising effort for our Give Joy campaign!
