Many Hands for Haiti is among the first organizations chosen by the World Food Prize Foundation to be profiled in the Iowa Hunger Directory. The directory will connect hunger fighters across Iowa for collaboration and networking. Based in Pella, MH4H seeks to address the complex web of poverty in Haiti through sustainable economic and leadership development.
Last year MH4H provided over 200,000 meals in Haiti and is expected to surpass 350,000 meals in 2013. MH4H distributes food through various programs they help to operate including two schools, a hospital, and churches in Gonaives and Pignon, Haiti. Privately funded, MH4H facilitates child sponsorships and mission trips from churches across the nation. MH4H will soon be operating a thrift store, Many Hands Market, in Spencer, Iowa. Proceeds from the store will be used directly in Haiti for programming and economic development. Coffee, jewelry and other Haitian-made products will also be sold.
World Food Prize Ambassador Kenneth M. Quinn said the goal of the directory is “to celebrate and facilitate the continued efforts of the thousands of Iowans whose diligent work fighting hunger continues the legacy of Iowa’s great humanitarian tradition.”
MH4H partners with Convoy of Hope, Meals from the Heartland, and Outreach, Inc., which provides free, prepackaged meals from the U.S.
