Monica Clarke accurately prayed, “Lord Jesus, tonight we rejoice with the angels,” as The Trinity Reformed team trailed Pastor Lumanes to a home made of mud and stick in the town, Sentyak. They did this to stand as witnesses to two new believers’ declarations of faith.

The couple was older – well into their seventies. The bright blue of advancing cataracts was a direct contrast against their brown eyes. Husband and wife sat side-by-side as Pastor Lumanes questioned them. “Why do you want to give your lives to Christ? Do you know why Jesus died on the cross? Are you following any idols that need to be renounced?” Meanwhile, the team stood outside praying for the Holy Spirit to soften their hearts to the Savior. Finally, everyone was called inside to witness the couple’s declaration of faith.

Explaining what it means to follow Christ

The old man stood first. He fidgeted with his unbuttoned shirt until a neighbor pushed through the crowd to help straighten his clothing. Though he spoke slowly, fumbling over his words as he steadfastly denounced his old life and proclaimed his faith in Jesus Christ.

Unable to contain her excitement, his wife’s eyes shone with joy and tears! Neighbors also stood close by promising to support and disciple him in his new faith. They all had persevered in praying for this one man’s salvation for a long time.

When her turn came, the wife eagerly stood to declare the same words of faith. She had longed for this moment but refused to make the decision without her husband by her side. It was evident that this woman had just accepted and received the two things she wanted most: the love of her Savior and the knowledge that her husband would one day go to heaven with her.

As Monica Clarke accurately prayed later that evening, “Lord Jesus, tonight we rejoice with the angels.”

Team and kids singing praises outside couple’s house

Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!’ Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents. Luke 15:8-10

Let my eyewitness account fuel your prayers for the work of Many Hands in Haiti and challenge you to reach out to the lost people in your own communities.
