Empowering Families Through Goats in Haiti
Join Summer Brand, Many Hands Marketing Coordinator, as she shares an inspiring look at our July focus: the transformative Goat Program in Haiti! Discover how this incredible initiative is not only providing vital income and food security but also building brighter futures and restoring dignity for families in profound ways.
At Many Hands, we believe in empowering families to build a brighter future for themselves. This July, we’re shining a spotlight on a truly special initiative that embodies this belief: our Husbandry Economic Project (H.E.P), affectionately known as our Goat Program. This program isn’t just about goats; it’s about providing a path to sustainable income, food security, and dignity for families in Haiti.
Haiti faces significant challenges when it comes to food security. Nearly half the population does not have enough to eat, and a staggering 1.3 million people are highly food insecure. The country’s heavy reliance on food imports has unfortunately led to a decline in its own agricultural sector, meaning Haiti currently struggles to sustain itself. Our programs are specifically designed to meet these critical food challenges that rural Haitians face.
That’s where the Goat Program comes in, offering a truly scalable and sustainable solution. It’s a farmers’ co-op that provides families with the tools and knowledge to thrive. Here’s how it works: Parents participating in our program receive two pregnant goats and hands-on training from our team to grow and manage their herd.
Ongoing support is a cornerstone of the program. Each month, families bring their goats to our campus for essential health checks, allowing us to catch any potential issues early and ensure the well-being of the animals. Once the goats reach market weight, families have the incredible opportunity to sell them locally or even back to Many Hands. When goats are sold back to us, they help feed children in our other programs, creating a beautiful cycle of support within the community.
Perhaps one of the most impactful aspects of the Goat Program is how it directly benefits the next generation. The profits families make from selling their goats are matched by Many Hands and then placed into a dedicated education fund for their child. Imagine the hope and possibility this creates for a child’s future! By providing families with a means to support themselves and their children, we are giving power and dignity back to families. A goat provides a consistent stream of income and food, offering a vital source of stability for a family in need.
By contributing to the Goat Program, you are directly investing in sustainable solutions that tackle food insecurity and give families the power to feed themselves. You’re providing the opportunity for income, future growth, and the ability for children to attend school.
