As the Lutheran Church of Hope team walks paths that are several centuries old, they find that some old proverbs still ring true today. One of those truths from Proverbs 18:24 states, “A man who has friends must himself be friendly…” Learn here how easy it is to show yourself friendly.

Today was the day the group went to visit the Citadelle Fortress and I can’t even begin to say how amazing it was to see structures so amazing. These structures have been around for over 200 years and I can’t even fathom the amount of thought and physical labor that went into making them. As we toured the palace and fortress you can’t help but to imagine how neat it would have been to see everything in its original state and what it would have been like to live in the 1800’s. To have the opportunity to experience something like this and to learn about Haitian history was such a blessing.

Although, visiting Citadelle was an absolute amazing experience, it was not even the best part of the trip. As the 12 of us ride down the streets of Haiti for 2.5 hours in the back of a pick up truck, a small gesture of kindness and compassion can go a long way. It’s so beautiful what a wave and a smile can do to express to the Haitians how thankful and happy we are to experience their culture and that we care about them. Some Haitians don’t wave or smile back but more often than not, an angry expression can turn into a smile and a wave back. It is a beautiful, unforgettable moment that we are so blessed to be a part of. They are our brothers and sisters in Christ and we love them and I hope that even a small gesture such as a smile and wave can begin to express that.
